On page 107 of Pride and Prejudice, I felt a visceral emotional reaction to Mr. Collins’ response to Elizabeth refusing his marriage proposal. I sometimes feel small in male-dominated spaces because I fear not being taken seriously. Mr. Collins’ has no respect for Elizabeth’s autonomy and values, laughing at her firm rejection and perceiving it as an elegant way of charming him. His ego and undeserved pride won’t allow him to accept it.
